Shit. This doesn’t bode well for the piston and/or valves.

might have just blown out the exhaust valves...

Ooh, strapless plugs. Fancy.

On the plus side, I’d say you found the cause of your misfire... Doesn’t look like you’ll need to spend a bunch of money replacing all the coils.

Shitty sparkplugs. Get some OEM style and junk those.

These ARE oem style. They’re Bosch too.

Little Black Electrode, with the insulator down low.

I don’t see what all the hub bub is all about. Put the plug back in and go for a drive.... uphill should be fun

What is oem style supposed to mean? Get the iridium at the right temp specified by the oem and then call it a day. That applies for every car.

I’m curious how they break off in the first place. The plugs in my car at 75,000 miles looked nearly new, it would take significant internal fuckery
to mess up a plug like that.

Not a bajillion electrodes all over the place.

The spark plug on the right seems pretty gross for 6,000 miles. Do you have an idea of what that may be?
![]() 10/17/2018 at 12:51 |

That looks a plug I pulled out of my Tercel a week before it died.
But I wouldn’t worry.

Engine has 260k miles and burns dirty and probably hot as a result?

Ugh.

I wonder if the spark plugs were the right temp for the engine or if the coils are sending too many amps? I guess new different spark plugs is they way to go and check them in 5,000-6,000
miles.

I did have an overheat a few months ago. That could have made the prongs brittle.

1. Install new plugs.
2. Start engine and see if it idles smoothly
3. If yes, close hood, problem solved, bullet dodged.
4. If no, borrow compression gauge and see if all equal.
The plug does not look horrible/burnt/destroyed. My bet is you will find you will ok at step 3.

Look closely at the plug on the left. You'll see that pieces of it have broken off.

Nuts.
![]() 10/17/2018 at 15:33 |

that explains the misfire, but you still got to find out why the cylinder went so hot/lean, as to blowtorch ALL the straps off that plug........

I did have an overheat two months ago...
![]() 10/17/2018 at 16:31 |

did you find out why it got hot?....... it would take running it super lean for a little bit to get the inside cylinder temp hot enough to melt off the spark plug ground straps, and a hole in the top of the piston/top ring land melting off (or breaking breaking the top ring) entirely are not very far behind.....

I feel for you. My Peugeot started misfiring yesterday. It’s parked in some residential area right now, a few kms away. Haven’t been able to do a proper diagnose just yet, but I fear something similar might have happened. Have ordered new plugs and a coil already.
18 years old and 337k km on the odometer...

At least you have a single coil... I have six.
![]() 10/17/2018 at 17:16 |

well, that would get it hot, but i dunno about ground strap melting hot...... you might just get lucky though, and get off with just having to swap plugs, BUT you are going to want to check that hole that got melted fairly often for any unusual color or textures showing up .atleast for a while ......

True. And 6 plugs, where I have just 4. Still though, I just hope that throwing these parts at it will fix the issue. For us both. That no cylinders or valves are damaged.

Oh well, change it and see what happens. Sometime foreign objects go through the engine. Most don’t hurt anything. Cars take a lot of abuse. But If it misses after replacing the plug, its probably hurt.
